To Find the Limiting Reagent Follow These Steps

For the balanced equation shown below, what would be the limiting reagent if 49.2 grams of CO were reacted with 6.41 grams of H2? 3CO+7H2=>C3H8+3H2O

first you must define the reagents.
                CO is reagent 1                 H2 is reagent 2

then you find the molar mass of each reagent

                CO = 12 + 16 = 28                 H2 = 1 x 2 = 2

then set up the equation
coefficient of the molar mass x molar mass of reagent 2
coefficient of the molar mass x molar mass of reagent 1     X    the amount of reagent 1 given

and sub in the corresponding numbers

7 x 2
3 x 28  x  49.2

do out the math to get the amount of reagent 2 needed
        8.2 grams

compare the answer to the question
            8.2 grams is more than 6.41 grams, that means i don’t have enough H2 to react with the CO making H2 the limiting reagent

ANSWER: H2
